Why I’m Launching a New Web Design Business Just for Authors

I’m starting a new chapter – launching a web design and digital marketing business for authors.

For over six years, my web design business, Bookend Studio, has served a mix of authors and small businesses, with a few other creative entrepreneurs. Before that I was a freelance copy writer and web designer.

Over all those years, I’ve learned a lot about the clients I serve. Including that a one-size-fits-most web design agency doesn’t fit the very different needs of businesses and authors.

Author Websites in a Day solves the problem by offering services, packages, a streamlined process, and competitive pricing that is tailor made for authors.

How I Got Started with Author Websites

made my first website in 1999 at age 15 to share some of my writing online. I learned HTML from an online web ring of tutorials. With Image of what Amazon's homepage looked like in 1999.

I made my first website my freshman year of high school to share some original stories I had written. That was back in the ancient days when flashing colored text was the height of web design fashion. I kept making websites for myself, friends, and nonprofits for the next 13 years.

When I finally had the epiphany to try web design as a career, many of my first web design clients were people who knew me from writing circles. I made their author websites and built sites for their small businesses.

Most of my favorite clients and projects have been authors. I’m passionate about books and supporting writers. In a small way, I get to contribute to their success by giving them a platform to showcase their amazing work and

Why Authors Need a Different Kind of Web Design Agency

My business has always followed a standard web design approach: before we even sign on, we have a meeting to learn about the client and their website needs, draw up a custom web design proposal, then go through a lot of back and forth to settle on design, layout, sitemap, and more.

It’s not a good fit for authors who would much rather spend their time writing or reading than hashing out sitemaps. (Once they learn what a sitemap is, of course.) Plus, that much time means increased costs.

At the same time, the web design agency is reconsidering that standard approach. Many are moving away from generic service offerings and processes that must fit everything from million dollar eccomerce shops, pop-up food stands, and creative entrepreneurs. Instead, they’re focusing on specific types of clients with a laser-focus on meeting their needs.

That’s where Author Websites in A Day comes in.

How Author Websites in A Day is Different from other Web Design Agencies (Including My Own)

This new business is specifically designed for authors vs. Bookend Studio that follows a more standard model and fits the needs of many kinds of businesses.

Our web design packages are designed for authors. After building dozens of author websites, we know what pages and features authors need. So rather than discovering for the 50th time that you need a page to showcase your books, we can spend that time creating a design that fits your needs and will draw in your readers.

We save you time by using tools specially created for authors. Like the forms we use to gather information that authors need to share on their website. There’s no guess work for you on what you need to share on your website or how to get it to us.

The new streamlined process is the real star, though. No more weeks of projects dragging on. Our experience with building author websites along with a lean process, means we can will have your website done in a day. Yes, really.
